Custom made cake toppers are a great way to personalise your wedding day celebrations without spending a fortune. Hand made wedding cake toppers, depicting the personalities of the marrying couple, make a great talking point and can be kept as a memento of your special day together.
Of the many artists these days creating personalised wedding cake toppers Sue Weston of westonsuper-models stands out from the crowd. Sue’s wedding cake characters really seem to have a personality of their own and I thought you might want to know more, so here’s a few questions.

How did you get into making cake toppers?
As a child I was obsessed with making things from Plasticine, I tried making everything from miniature doll’s house food to an actual wobbly Plasticine house! On reflection, this was rather ambitious for a six year old!
In the late 80’s I completed an HND in art and, having studied sculpture and pottery, I was thrilled to discover Fimo. It involves no mess, you can fire it in your own oven, rather than a kiln, and it doesn’t need painting or glazing.
A neighbour asked me to make a model of their friends for a Christmas present. From a photo and a brief description of their interests and hobbies I created what I thought would be a good likeness. Apparently they all fell about laughing as the model did actually look so much like them.
When did you start making cake toppers commercially then?
I discovered eBay about three years ago, and saw that people were making cute figures from Fimo for wedding cake toppers. I made a very basic little pair at first, with just a little smiley round faces, but from then onwards I became more and more involved with trying to make the faces and the bodies look more life-like, and actually try to resemble the people.
I am now just selling through my website at www.westonsuper-models.co.uk, and have attracted the attention of folk in Australia, Canada, Spain, U.S.A as well as the UK. My wedding couples start at £115, and I don’t charge much more for any other extras.
Any odd requests?
I have received a few interesting enquiries, including requests for cake toppers with the Bride and Groom snow-boarding, surfing and abseiling.
But the funniest are requests to have the bride feeling the grooms bum or vice versa!
This is becoming such a popular theme, that I may have to dedicate a page on the website to it.
I like the Amy Winehouse figure – what inspired you to do that?
I have just started on my celebrity look-a-like range, to enhance the website and help with promoting my models.
However, as it’s been such a busy Summer I haven’t had time to do any more…, but watch this space…the best is yet to come. I won’t quit until Prince William gets married and chooses me to make his cake topper!
